Self-Defense (Hapkido)

  1. Face to face with opponent grab the thumb side of their left hand with your right hand turned to the left so your thumb is on bottom, twist their hand over to the right and their hand is now palm up and you add your left hand with both of your thumbs under their knuckles with your fingers wrapping around the outside of their hand, stepping back with your right foot into a horse stance #4 as you take them off balance sending them onto their back and you punch them in the face with your left fist yelling EIGHT! without letting go of their hand.
  2. Opponent grabs defender’s left wrist with their right hand. Defender grabs the outside of attackers hand at same pushing their thumb into pressure point between attackers thumb and first finger turning over the attackers arm to the right with both of defenders thumbs just under the knuckles of attacker and pull attacker forward onto their belly and lock their arm behind their back yelling EIGHT!
  3. Opponent grabs defender’s left wrist with their right hand. Defender turns their hand to the left and grabs the attacking wrist from underneath at the same time grabbing the top of the same wrist with your right hand with your thumb on the left side close to your left hand. Move attackers arm to the left and raise it all the way up to create an opening for you to step under their arm with your right foot as you turn 180 deg. and step all the way back with your left foot now the opposite direction as you cut down with both arms throwing your opponent into a roll the same direction they are facing and locking their arm against your right leg to break it, yell EIGHT! Variation of this uses Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to finish with straight armlock from guard.

Start in ready position.

1. Turn 90° to the left into left front stance, high block with left hand.

2. Front kick with right foot, setting foot down in right front stance.*

2b. Without stepping, middle punch with right hand.

3. Turn 180° to the right into right front stance, high block with right hand.

4. Front kick with left foot, setting foot down in left front stance.*

4b. Without stepping, middle punch with left hand.

5. Turn 90° to the left into right back stance (left foot forward), double low knife hand block to the left.

6. Step forward into left back stance (right foot forward), double high knife hand block to the right.*

7. Step forward into left front stance, high block with left hand.

8. Step forward into right front stance, middle punch with right hand. Gi-yup!

9. Turn 270° to the left into left front stance, high block with left hand.

10. Front kick with right foot, setting foot down in right front stance.*

10b. Without stepping, middle punch with right hand.

11. Turn 180° to the right into right front stance, high block with right hand.

12. Front kick with left foot, setting foot down in left front stance.*

12b. Without stepping, middle punch with left hand.

13. Turn 90° to the left into right back stance (left foot forward), double low side block to the left.

14. Step forward into right front stance (right foot forward), double high side block to the right.*

15. Step forward into right back stance (left foot forward), inward middle block with left hand.

16. Step forward into right front stance, middle punch with right hand. Gi-yup!

17. Turn 270° to the left into left front stance, high block with left hand.

18. Front kick with right foot, setting foot down in right front stance.*

18b. Without stepping, middle punch with right hand.

19. Turn 180° to the right into right front stance, high block with right hand.

20. Front kick with left foot, setting foot down in left front stance.*
