Self-Defense (Hapkido)

  1. Opponent grabs your right wrist with their right hand and you grab the outside of the attacking hand with your left hand twisting to the left so their palm is up and you add put both of your thumbs under their knuckles with your fingers wrapping around the outside of their hand, stepping back with your left foot into a horse stance #4 as you take them off balance sending them onto their back and you punch them in the face with your right fist yelling EIGHT! without letting go of their hand.
  2. Opponent grabs your right wrist with their right hand and you snake your right hand to the right grabbing the top of opponent’s forearm and turning it over to the right to make them bow down at the same time putting your left elbow on top of their right elbow stepping back to bow them down more and you left elbow attack their spine yelling EIGHT!
  3. Opponent is in a right combat stance #10 and Defender is in a left combat stance and Defender kicks up their right leg behind Opponent’s right leg and sweeps back of opponent’s legs kicking up between their legs at same time grabbing around the neck with the crook of your right arm to throw them onto their back yelling EIGHT! From here either attack them with an axe kick or go to side control when they fall. Quickly approach them from the side as they try to get up and push their chest with both hands to put them on their back and commence side control eventually to full mount. (See pg 3 for more detail).
  4. Opponent grabs your right shoulder with their left hand. You wrap your forearm to the right over their arm trapping their arm under yours, and you grab their attacking arm with your left hand at the same time grabbing your own forearm with your right hand totally immobilizing their arm yelling EIGHT! as you then sweep them to the ground with your back leg behind their front leg landing onto top of them in full mount (knees high around their waist on the ground) then you throw a flurry of punches until they turn over and you then sink in the Rear Naked Choke (sleeper hold) (pg3 for detail).

Start in ready position.

1. Turn 90° to the left into left front stance, low block with left hand.

2. Step forward into right front stance, middle punch with right hand.

3. Turn 180° to the right into right front stance, low block with right hand.

4. Step forward into left front stance, middle punch with left hand.

5. Turn 90° to the left into left front stance, low block with left hand.

6. Step forward into right front stance, high block with right hand.

7. Step forward into left front stance, high block with left hand.

8. Step forward into right front stance, high punch with right hand. Gi-yup!

9. Turn 270° to the left into right back stance (left foot forward), double high knife hand block to the left.

10. Step forward into left back stance (right foot forward), double high knife hand block to the right.

11. Turn 180° to the right into left back stance (right foot forward), double high knife hand block to the right.

12. Step forward into right back stance (left foot forward), double high knife hand block to the left.

13. Turn 90° to the left into right back stance (left foot slides to point to the left), side middle block to the left.

13b. Turn 180° to the right into left back stance (right foot turns forward to right), side middle block to the right.

14. Step w/right foot back into right back stance (facing opposite direction), inward middle block with left hand.

15. Step w/left foot back into left back stance (right foot forward), inward middle block with right hand.

16. Step w/right foot back into right back stance (left foot forward), side middle block with left hand.

16b. Turn 180° to the right into left back stance (right foot turns forward), side middle block to the right. EIGHT!

17. Turn 270° to the left into left front stance, high block with left hand.

18. Step forward into right front stance, high punch with right hand.

19. Turn 180° to the right into right front stance, high block with right hand.

20. Step forward into left front stance, high punch with left hand.


Side Mount (positional control)


Roll Prevention: Opponent on his back and we’ll use his right side for example: you are on his right side about chest high perpendicular to his body with your left leg posted straight out perpendicular with knee slightly bent and your right leg fully extended with the top of the thigh on the ground with your left arm under his neck and your right arm under his left armpit and clasp both of your hand together. If he tries to bridge/roll you over to his left (you can tell when he pushes your left side with his right elbow or bear hugs you) you post your right hand on ground and if he bridges the other way your left posted leg with stop it. If he turns in a circle in either direction, turn/walk with him. 


Guard Prevention:If he uses his right arm to push your hips up enough to get guard or you feel his right knee coming under your legs you switch your legs so your left leg is parallel with his body to prevent guard. If he puts his left arm across your throat you push it past your head kind to trap it.


Full Mount Transition: Get on your knees and put your left knee into his right armpit so your leg is under his arm then place your left knee across his gut then your right arm posts to the ground and shift your weight forward until your right knee is on the ground slide it south as possible and turn your body to the left and your right leg with slap the ground putting you in mount and you shoot your right knee to his armpit and if his legs push the ground knees coming up then insert your hooks.


Rear Naked Choke: (sleeper hold) you shoot your arm deep around their neck in a strangling position under their chin (your elbow lined up with chin) then you take your other hand and put it behind their head to push it forward as you pinch both of your elbows together squeezing the rear naked choke until they tap out.
